ABOUT THE FILM

With a setting in a glamorous Berlin hotel we follow many unrelated stories, including: Greta Garbo as an aging, bored ballerina who is pursued by John Barrymore (a poor baron, who's now a jewel thief) who incorrectly thinks she's rich. Lionel Barrymore was the doomed bookkeeper, Joan Crawford was the stenographer and Wallace Beery was the Prussian industrialist.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Irving Thalberg (1899-1936) was considered MGM's boy wonder of the early thirties. He was married to actress Norma Shearer.

He was responsible for many films, including: MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY and ROMEO AND JULIET. Thalberg also hired the Marx Brothers.

Was based on Vicki Baum's best selling novel.

This film was considered to be the first big, all-star talkie.
