THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY (1998)

Mary was and still is the "It" girl of geeky Ted's dreams. Now out of high school, Ted packs away horrors of high school, polyester prom suits, and other atrocities that prevented his dream night with Mary from ever being fully realized, and heads out to find her thirteen years later to fulfill his unrequited love. Hiring a P.I. to track her down, Ted is taken aback when he discovers the investigator may also be falling for Mary, consequently giving Ted false information about the updated status of her persona and whereabouts. Without the help of the P.I., Ted manages to squeeze back into Mary's life, which of course, provokes one uncomfortably comic scenario after the next.

The perfect cast includes: Cameron Diaz, Ben Stiller, Matt Dillon; with Lee Evans and Chris Elliott.

Directed by Peter and Bob Farrelly "There's Something About Mary" is a wild, unconventional, and over-the-top romantic comedy from the creators of "Dumb and Dumber" and "Kingpin."

In short, beautiful Mary (Diaz) possesses a special "something" which makes every man who meets her, fall in love with her. Throughout the film all the boyfriends (past and present) plot to foil the others and plot to win Mary's heart.

This "cheerfully crude and way over the line" screenplay was written by John J. Strauss, Ed Decter, Peter & Bobby Farrelly. The Farrelly brothers also directed this unique effort.

Cameron Diaz (The Mask) and Ben Stiller (Reality Bites) are great as the high school sweat-hearts. Matt Dillon is great as the nightmare boyfriend.

Our favorite supporting character, Mary's original crazy boyfriend was played by Chris Elliott. His makeup changes throughout the film.

The musical interludes, done by the on camera folk singers was a classy touch that was copied from "Cat Ballou."

The prom date scene is outrageous and fun. Another favorite scene takes place late in the movie, when all of Mary's past boyfriends and current suitors argue and fight over her.

Also be sure to catch the end credits with the out-takes and additional footage, this makes a unique perfect ending to the story.

Rated R for strong comic sexual content and real crude language; (as the LA TIMES says it: "cheerfully crude and way over the line") It is not everyone's cup of tea, which is anyone with a higher standard of humor, but the film is hilarious if you enjoy this type of low brow, crude humor. It is on the opposite end of such comedy classics as "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World," where the talent of the comedians involved and a clever script were the vehicles of comedy. It is a classic in this genre of crude humorous films, though, which has a huge audience.

Definitely not for the under 17 crowd, or adults who have a higher sense of what is funny.

If you enjoyed THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY you may like AMERICAN PIE, ME- MYSELF AND I, DUMB AND DUMBER, HAPPY GILMORE, PORKY'S, BLAZING SADDLES, MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL and HOT SHOTS PART DEUX.
