AUSTIN POWERS, International Man of Mystery (1997)

Director Jay Roach's "Austin Powers" is a fun, ribald comedy-adventure 60's spy spoof, which gets its chuckles from a satirical look at such spy classics as the James Bond movies. The talented comedian Mike Myers  portrays both the swinging, 60's era Austin Powers, whose behavior is patterned after the character, James Bond, and the really bad guy, Dr. Evil, his nemesis. Dr. Evil is a humorous portrayal of  the dastardly villains in spy yarns which lurk, and cause huge woes for the world and spys like James Bond.

Director Jay Roach's "Austin Powers" is a fun, comedy-adventure 60's spy spoof.

The cast includes: Mike Myers, Elizabeth Hurley, Michael York, Mimi Rogers; with Robert Wagner. Both Carrie Fisher and Tom Arnold have cameo appearances.

Synopsis:

The coolest spy from the '60's is thawed out in the '90's! In short our swinging hero must stop yet another one of Dr. Evil's outrageous plots to control the world.

Director Jay Roach's "Austin Powers" is a fun, comedy-adventure 60's spy spoof. Mike Myers gets praise for writing the script, which is a satirical look at the spy world depicted in the many James Bond movies. Many sight gags, cleverly-timed dialog, comical pacing and farcical situations are hilariously funny, if sometimes off-color, containing sexual innuendos. One famous line of Austin Powers, was "Oh Behave!!"

Mike Myers is very funny as the James Bond clone, Austin Powers, and as the evil, wicked Dr. Evil. Both characters are very out-of-date in the 1990's, and have adjustments to make, in order to be effective. Austin Powers, when frozen back in the 1960's, was a real skirt chaser, and loved to swing. What was cool, "in" behavior in the 1960's, Powers finds is not necessarily considered proper in the 1990's, causing him to experience cultural shock, which results in some really funny, if a bit squirmy situations. His British agent side-kick, Vanessa Kensington (Elizabeth Hurley), has her hands full, and her work cut out for her, in helping Powers adjust enough, to fight the infamous Dr. Evil.

Dr. Evil, also played by Mike Myers as well, has his own problems, when he returns to earth from a spaceship, to do his best to hatch an evil plan. He finds that his first attempt at an evil plan, won't even be considered malicious mischief by today's standards of evil plans. However, his employees, mainly Number 2, (Robert Wagner), tutor him, and he finally comes up with an acceptable, dastardly plan, that challenges Austin Powers to focus on the task at hand, which results in a very entertaining, silly, satirical movie for adult, & older youth audiences.

Elizabeth Hurley is wonderful as the beautiful British agent, Vanessa Kensington, the daughter of his former '60's partner, who is now Austin Powers side-kick, and eventual love interest, which ends in a traditional marriage.

Favorite Scenes include: One that takes place in the men's room (Tom Arnold's cameo scene) when Austin fights off a bad guy. Another is a funny bit showing Dr. Evil's method of disposing of an employee who displeased him, that didn't quite work right; which pokes fun at the James Bond villains evil methods of disposal.

The "colorful" camera work was due to Peter Deming's hard work. While the fast editing praise goes to Debra Neil-Fisher. The costumes (right out of the 1960's) were lots of fun.

George S. Clinton gets the credit for the snappy music.

If you enjoy silly, farcical humor, this movie is for you!

Rated: PG-13 (90 minutes) - Reccommended for adult or older youth audiences.

If you enjoyed AUSTIN POWERS, you might like AUSTIN POWERS: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME, CASINO ROYALE, MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL, ACE VENTURA, PET DETECTIVE, and WAYNE'S WORLD.
