A Man Called Horse (1970) Before Dances with Wolves there was A Man Called Horse. In the Costner role is Richard Harris, an English aristocrat captured by Dakota Sioux in 1825. He comes to respect and identify with their way of life, and eventually becomes their leader. The most memorable scene depicts Harris in a bloody tribal initiation ritual that involves being suspended in the air by blades inserted beneath his pectoral muscles.
