The year is 1984. The setting is Northern England where a mining town has gone on strike, including the men of the Elliot family. But when eleven year old Billy decides he would rather take ballet with the girls than get pummeled in the boxing ring at school his male-dominated family is avidly opposed. With his "unmanly" love supported only by ballet instructor Mrs. Wilkinson, she agrees to train Billy in secret so as not to upset his family. But when Billy's talent lands him an audition for the Royal Ballet School it seems Billy will be forced to confess his love of dance in hopes that his family will still support his dreams.
