Capricorn One (1978) PG

Literally moments before launch, the first NASA astronauts bound for Mars are pulled from the capsule and told that their mission would have ended in disaster due to fatal technical problems. They're asked, therefore, to fake the Mars landing. The astronauts (Sam Waterston, James Brolin and O.J. Simpson) agree under duress, but as an inquisitive reporter (Elliott Gould) starts sniffing out the truth behind the charade of the mission, events start to spin out of control, and the powers that be at NASA decide it's time to turn the astronauts into martyrs.
