Despite his good natured-ness, Charly is a mentally handicapped adult trying to make it in a world of prejudice. After endless defeats in Charly's educational struggle, his teacher Miss Kinnian introduces Charly to a group of scientists who propose to conduct an experiment on Charly aimed to raise his IQ. Despite Charly's treatment successfully raising his IQ, it seems his emotional maturity is not progressing in tandem, thus a very smart, emotionally insecure man who grasps to deal with the consequences of his new life as an autonomous individual.
