It's the late sixties and Susanna, overwhelmingly depressed with her post-high school directionless-ness, is institutionalized at mental ward Claymore. There, Susanna befriends several troubled mental patients including, Georgina the pathological liar, sexual abuse victim Daisy, and burn victim Polly. Then there's Lisa; wild and crazy, and completely hardened to life. With Lisa pulling Susanna in to the insanity at Claymore, will Susanna find comfort in the institution, or will she pull herself together and start her new life outside Claymore's bars?
