Goin' South (1978)

While en route to his escape to Mexico, Henry Moon is captured. Awaiting trial for a capital offense, Moon discovers that the one way he can be saved is to marry a widowed or single woman of the small, post-Civil War town.  Deciding on the entrepreneurial Julia Tate, the Sheriff warns him of the consequences involved in leaving Julia.  All the same, Henry is let off the noose under the agreement that he tries to make his unexpected new marriage work for the best.
