The Good Earth (1937) This story focuses on the humility and courage of a poor Chinese farmer who marries a slave girl from the "Great House." Together they raise a family and live humbly; until famine hits and forces the family to look for work in the city. Meanwhile the farmer's love life is complicated by the entry of a beautiful younger woman who has attracted the heart of both father and son! More problems still to come when locusts invade! The cast includes: Paul Muni, Luise Rainer, Tilly Losch, Jessie Ralph, Walter Connolly, Charley Grapewin, Soo Yong, and Keye Luke. THE GOOD EARTH was nominated for the 1937 Best Picture award.
