Middle-aged drunk Elwood seems to have lost it when he starts introducing everyone he meets to his buddy Harvey, a six foot white rabbit only he can see. So as to entertain Elwood, his sister Veta occasionally agrees to Harvey's presence. Desperate, Veta tries to commit Elwood to Chumley's Rest sanatorium things go awry and they end up releasing Elwood and committing Veta instead. But when Dr. Chumley realizes what has happened, he decides to pursue Elwood and Harvey on his own.
