When work becomes more important to Ted Kramer than his family, wife Joanna Kramer decides to leave the situation. Left to father his son alone, Kramer is forced to adjust to a new way of life that comes with a different set of responsibilities. In time Joanna returns to claim her son, a son Ted has finally learned to dedicate his life to. Thus the custody trial of Kramer vs. Kramer ensues.
