The film traces the trials and tribulations, or perhaps that’s tribulations and trials, of notorious blues legend Billie Holiday. Beginning with her lat childhood, the film follows her life as it meanders through prostitution, drugs, multiple marriages, and the hectic tour life.

The cast includes: Diana Ross, Richard Pryor, Billy Dee Williams, James T. Callahan, Paul Hampton, Sid Melton, Yvonne Fair, and Virginia Capers.
