Set in the time of the Russian Revolution the film depicts the tragedy of the last Czar of Russia, Nicholas II, and his wife Alexandra. Throughout the film the audience gets an intimate portrait of both their marriage and their daughters, and also the family secret that put them at the mercies of the radical Rasputin, which lead to their infamous execution.

The cast includes: Michael Jayston, Janet Suzman, Roderic Noble, Ania Marson, Lynne Frederick, Candace Glenndenning, Fiona Fullerton, and Tom Baker.

NICHOLAS AND ALEXANDRA was nominated for the Best Picture award.
