Reuben, Reuben (1983)

Tom Conti offers a memorable performance as Gowan McGland, a charismatic, creatively-blocked, womanizing poet who ekes out a living mooching off gentrified patrons whom he flatters eloquently at poetry readings. A career drunk who's wasted his considerable talents, McGland falls in love with a young college student, Geneva Spofford (Kelly McGillis, in her film debut), but their affair fizzles quickly. From there his story spirals down to a single point of unspeakably sad irony.
