During a Russian book conference three notebooks allegedly containing Russian military secrets are placed in the hands of a British publisher. With the British secret service quite interested in the validity of the articles, they enlist the help of publisher Barley Blair, a man with a resume full of "Russian experience" to discover their origin. With Barley's natural repugnance to authority, things get complicated as both the origin and material of the notebooks become a stake with a high price for quite a few investors.

The cast includes: Sean Connery, Michelle Pfeiffer, Roy Scheider, John Mahoney, Michael Kitchen, Klaus Maria Brandauer, James Fox, J.T.Walsh, Ken Russell, and David Threlfall.
