Ship of Fools (1965)
In an intimately satirical portrait of society at large; a multi-cultural passenger list boards a Mexican vessel set to sail to pre-Hitler Germany. With a rational dwarf, Glocken, narrating the tail, he unravels the mysteries of the passengers and crew aboard the ship. During the thirty-six day voyage much focus is paid to a love affair between Dr. Schumann and a periled Spanish aristocrat La Condessa, as well as the dwindling flame between two American artists. In addition there are the colorful groups of scandalous dance troupes, a brigade of wealthy Jewish men, and of course, disciples of Naziism. The cast includes: Simone Signoret, Vivien Leigh, Jose Ferrer, Lee Marvin, Michael Dunn, Oskar Werner, Jose Greco, Elizabeth Ashley, and George Segal. SHIP OF FOOLS was nominated for the Best Picture award. Directed by: Stanley Kramer.
