1930's Chicago newspaper reporter Hildy Johnson is tired of the games. Determined to quit his job and get married, Walter Burns his wily editor, schemes how to get in the way of Johnson's resignation. With only days before death row's criminally insane murderer Earl Williams receives his sentence, Burns tries to persuade Johnson to hold off on his resignation until he covers the story.
