The Great Dictator (1940)

In Chaplin's first auditory satire, he takes on the task of playing two contradicting characters who parody Nazi Germany. His first character, Adeoid Hynkel, is the dictator of Tomania. His second is that of a Jewish Barber. Through a series of comical events the Barber recovers from his "amnesia" and discovers Hynkel's persecution of the Jewish people in his country. When the Barber employees the help of a friend, Schultz, the two disguise themselves in military garb to try to get behind "enemy lines". But with the Barber and Hynkel looking so similar, mix-ups and laughter ensue.

The cast includes: Charles Chaplin, Jack Oakie, Paulette Goddard, Billy Gilbert, Reginald Gardiner, Henry Daniell, Carter DeHaven, and Grace Hayle.

Directed by: Charles Chaplin.
