The Heiress (1949)

Based on the Henry Jame's novel Washington Square, the film is about an 1840's New York family named the Slopers. Dr. Sloper's daughter Catherine constantly feels incompetent in contrast to the upstanding reputation of her passed mother. Shy and unconfident, Catherine easily falls for a handsome but penniless Morris Townsend who seeks her courting. Dr. Sloper however, is convinced that Morris's interests lay more with Catherine's inheritance than her heart and refuses to approve of their marriage. Instead, Dr. Sloper whisks Catherine away to Europe whereby Catherine decides to return to New York and elope with Morris. But when Dr. Sloper threatens to disinherit his daughter will Morris's intentions be dissuaded, or will he marry Catherine because he actually loves her?
