Robin Williams plays the title role in this strikingly faithful movie adaptation of the best-selling novel by John Irving. The world of T.S. Garp, the bastard son of an against-the-grain mother (Glenn Close) and a vegetative ball-turret gunner, is one of lunacy and sorrow, peopled by a strange gallery of characters, including a tragically misunderstood feminist icon, the fanatics who follow her, and a transsexual football player (played memorably by John Lithgow).
