In 1878 in New Mexico, ranch worker John Tunstall is recruiting young hands to help with the work in exchange for reading and refinement lessons. But rancher owner Murphy is annoyed by Tunstall's ways and soon Tunstall end up dead at the hands of Murphy's men. With Sheriff Brady working for Murphy it seems Judge Wilson can do nothing to avenge the crime. When more blood is shed in an effort to end Tunstall's case, his young apprentices, including the infamous "Billie the Kid, are left notorious and on the run from Murphy's men with only a few faithful townspeople to aid the way.
