Meet John Beckwith (Owen Wilson) and Jeremy Grey
(Vince Vaughan): two middle-aged party animals who, when they're
not operating as 'upstanding' divorce attorneys, are playing the
much coveted part of a bachelor's dream as notorious 'wedding
crashers'. From Jewish, to Hindu, to Chinese, to Italian weddings,
Beckwith and Grey gallivant around the tasty cultural hors de
oeuvres, ample champagne, and hundreds of speculating wedding
guests as they farce their way into filial relations much to the
amusement and entertainment of the bride and groom, and themselves
of course.
From first course to toasts to cake-cutting, the
men work their way into the multiplicity of wanting female hearts,
bridesmaids and all. With classic excuses such as the Foreign
French Legion, to the Yankees, to the war, John and Jeremy, using
false identification of course, charm their way into countless
numbers of women's hearts for an extended time cap on their mischievous
night of fun back at the hotel. As John and Jeremy are reveling
about their latest nightly escapade, suddenly John lets on that
he might be less than exuberant than his partner about their wily
ways.
But when Jeremy comes to work with the latest and
greatest opportunity, "Treasury Secretary William's daughter's
over-the-top wedding bonanza, John's party-hardy buddy manages
to convince him to dapple into one last big hoorah before retiring
from the tiring 'wedding season'. There, however, John catches
a glimpse of a beautiful brunette, coincidentally also Secretary
William's (Christopher Walken) daughter, Claire (Rachel McAdams).
While Jeremy keeps his eye on the 'red head', William's youngest
daughter Gloria (Isla Fisher), John tries to work his way into
Claire's heart. Thus, while Jeremy allegedly 'deflowers' Gloria
on a remote private beach, John bails Claire out of her 'tragic'
maid of honor speech. But though Jeremy has made full progress
with his smitten kitten, (read WAY TOO MUCH PROGRESS), John is
taken aback after the interested Claire is swept away by the leading
hand of her significant other, Zack "the Sack" Lodge (Bradley
Cooper).
As Jeremy runs up to his partner screaming "Warning,
#5 Clinger alert; I repeat: Virgin Clinger!", John, with the help
of a bubbly red head, convinces, or rather forces, Jeremy into
accompanying the Cleary's to their guest house for the weekend.
From badly forced clothing ensembles to a tragic game of football,
tragic for Jeremy anyways, to classic pranks at the dinner table,
John is easily making strides in the Cleary's esteem, particularly
Senator William's unfaithful wife (Jane Seymour). Likewise, William's
homosexual son Zack (Keir O'Donnell), the morose painter, seems
to think that he and Jeremy had a definite 'moment' and without
his sisters knowledge, surprises Jeremy in his bed with a 'sensual'
homage to his manhood.
Meanwhile the vomiting Zack begins to berate his
power over Claire, much to John's demise. To complicate matters
John is consistently being propositioned by Claire's mother, and
Zack has taken matters into his own hands to uncover the truth
behind the "new guys" and their story. A sailboat trip and a productive
bike ride later and Claire nearly pounces on John after a game
of 'hot hands' on the beach. But just as soon as the two head
back to the Cleary home for another dinner Zack decides to take
the selfish, un-discussed initiative to announce his and Claire's
engagement. But Claire looks less than excited and as she struggles
to deal with her 'fiancees' selfish actions she is heartbroken
when he complicates things by exposing John and Jeremy's true
reputations as 'wedding crashers'.
Three months later John is still trying to get a
hold of the defiant Clair who, though she won't return John's
calls, accept his gifts, or give him the time of day (to be blunt),
neither is she looking very excited for her upcoming marriage;
as Senator Williams begins to pick up on by her constant downcast
face and drawn expressions. As Claire tries to warm up her cold
as ice, 'I don't care about anything or anyone else besides myself
and my needs' fiancée; she is met with avid rejection. So too
is John making no further strides and discovering what he thinks
to be his friend betraying him by continuing to see his '#5 Clinger'
behind his back, heads over to Jeremy's friend Chaz's (HILARIOUS
cameo by Will Farrell) house for some inspiration.
But when Jeremy finally seeks out John, after weeks
of John's calculated avoidance of his best friend, and unveils
his upcoming wedding to none other than Gloria Cleary, will John
be able to pull himself out of his funk in time to save Claire
from making the biggest mistake of her life and still make it
to his best friend's wedding in time to play the honorable part
of Jeremy's best man?
WEDDING CRASHERS is a hilariously hot and witty
comedy that revels in its modern satire on pop culture, commerce,
and other cultural norms. Vaughan and Wilson steal the screen
as the dynamic duo John and Jeremy. From a ridiculous slew of
cult rules for their even more ridiculous habit of 'wedding crashing',
to their witty one-liners and faster than lightning dialogue,
Vaughan and Wilson dance, banter, and Improv their way through
the film in classic SNL style. Adding to the humor of the film
of course, is the reliance on the suspension of disbelief and
'tension' produced in much the same manner as the classic "Meet
the Parents" style.
Also adding star power to the film is the beautiful
Jane Seymour who steps out her wholesome mold to play the seductive
siren Kathleen Cleary. Of course her on-film husband, Christopher
Walken, is absolutely brilliant with his dry humor and his infamously
intimidating stature and poise which he conflates brilliantly
into the character of the powerful Senator William Cleary. Rachel
McAdams and Isla Fisher also grace the screen with their beauty:
the former playing the wholesome beauty while the latter is the
driving force for much of the comedy of the film with her overt
sexuality, ditsy persona, and kooky kinkiness… props to Fisher
for totally nailing the part of the stereotypical dumb blonde
as a perky red head.
Definitely not produced to edify the Oscar Academy,
all the same WEDDING CRASHERS is a classic pop culture comedy
that guarantees to satisfy the palates of mass audiences. With
one award under its belt, the Teen Choice Awards for Choice Summer
Movie, WEDDING CRASHERS is a hilarious comedy of sex, love,
lust, money, and mayhem that is flat out witty, sharp, and undeniably
entertaining.
