Meet Andy Stitzer (Steve Carell). At 40, he is probably
the only guy his age to still be a virgin. Nevertheless, between
his many hours spent collecting toy figurines, repainting mini
figurines, playing video games, and the tuba, Andy does a good
job of hiding his virginity from the world. But when the boys
at work discover his 'innocent secret' they began to postulate
ways to help Andy lose his V-card. There's Cal (Seth Rogen) who
is the smooth talker and woos his way into the ladies' hearts
with his nonchalant cool style.
There's Jay (Romany Malco), the suave black man
with style. Then there's David (Paul Rudd), the broken hearted
boy who half believes in true love, half desires vengeance for
his uncaring cheating girlfriend. Together the three repeatedly
try to hook Andy up with women, from the drunk chicks at a bar
to the random females at the local Data-A-Palooza, to no avail.
Seems the more Andy thinks about having sex, the more anxious
he becomes, and the less desire he feels to have it.
But all that is about to change when an attractive
forty-something woman named Trish (Catherine Keener) walks into
his store. Naively attempting to be an honest salesman, Andy's
non-misogynistic sales approach hits a soft spot in Trish's heart
who willingly offers up her number. Astounded, Andy confides in
the boys and seeks their advice for how to handle the situation.
Their answer: to sleep with as many women as possible before sowing
his seeds with the woman he loves. But Andy doesn't feel comfortable
with a promiscuous lifestyle, and even his boss Paula's (Jane
Lynch) offers are anything but enticing for Andy.
Nevertheless one dating failure to the next finally
provokes Andy to call Trish. After attempting to call her, like
10 times, he finally gets the courage to speak up and the two
hit it off instantly. But a tragic episode ends the first date
sooner than expected and Andy's guaranteed lay is stopped short
by Trish's daughter who barges in on the two. Deciding to slow
things down a bit, to Andy's relief, the two promise not to sleep
with each other until the 20th date, but of course Trish doesn't
know that Andy is still a virgin. As the 20th date rolls around
the sparks fly between Trish and Andy, that is, until Trish nearly
pounces Andy and inquires as to why he freaked out and won't sleep
with her. Panicked, Andy makes up some inane excuse and rushes
off to the nearest club where he will celebrate Jay's new fatherhood
by getting wasted and hitting on the hot chick from the local
bookstore. Heading back to her apartment to 'do the deed', Andy
is suddenly struck with the notion that he wants his first time
to special, not freaky, and ironically enough, his 3 boys come
to his rescue and pull Andy out of the freaky girl's apartment.
But when Andy heads home he finds Trish staring
at him in disgust after finding his friend David's huge porno
stash. Still unable to explain his virginal status, Trish begins
to think Andy is some sick sexual freak and she runs away from
him before he can explain the educational purposes of the sexual
paraphernalia. A sudden tragic crash on his bicycle brings Andy
to a stop and when Trish bends down to inquire as to his safety
he tells her the truth, he is, gasp, still a virgin. But Trish
is flattered and together the two decide to wait until their wedding
night. Throwing a huge wedding bash from the profits of selling
his figurines for a quaint half million dollars, Andy and Trish
head back to the honeymoon suite where Andy will quickly learn
what it feels like to be deflowered; and I do mean quickly.
THE 40-YEAR-OLD-VIRGIN is a witty comedy about the
clash of modern and traditional cultures. Where one man attempts
to wait, his virginity is half a result of wanting to wait for
the right woman, and half the result of his inability to perform
under pressure in bed. Meanwhile his very 21st century sexually
promiscuous friends encourage him to sow his seeds as often as
necessary and attempt to teach Andy the contemporary doctrine
of 'sexology', to no avail. Their nonchalant uncaring attitudes
about sex do anything but encourage Andy to copulate, and until
Trish walks in all seems hopeless. The chemistry between the lovers
could be hotter, but then again, the uncomfortable juvenility
is all part of the point; though 40, Andy is still like a kid
awaiting manhood.
With a number of funny one-liners, hilarious episodes,
and a solidly hilarious performance by the very brave Steve Carell,
'A 40-Year-Old-Virgin' will keep older audiences entertained from
start to finish. This is a modern comedy with contemporary pop-culture
satire that is chalk full of iconic and cultural parodies. This
film will make even the most conservative adult laugh at their
own propriety. Good times and much laughter all around for THE
40-YEAR-OLD-VIRGIN.
