The main story has Dreyfuss, Estevez, and O'Donnell
going undercover as a family. Their attempt to find a missing witness,
crucial to a Mafia trial, leads to humorous situations.
When a state's witness, Lu Delano (Cathy Moriarty)
who was under protective custody because she was going to testify
against the mob in Las Vegas, runs away to Washington when her
safe house is blown up by the mob's hit man, Tony Castellano (Miguel
Ferrer). Officer Chris Lecce (Dreyfuss), his partner, Bill Reimers
(Estevez) and Gina Garrett (O'Donnell) & her large dog set
up a stakeout in the large home next to the home of the woman's
friends, Pam & Brian O'Hara, (Dennis Farina & Marcia Srassman),
who live in a ritzy area of Puget Sound, Washington, along the
waterfront.
Against their better judgment, Chris and Bill
are forced to take novice O'Donnell, and her large Rottweiler, along,
because she is a higher up with clout, being the Assistant District
Attorney. Funny complications ensue when a baseball, O'Donnell,
her dog, and Dreyfuss's personal life problems with Maria cause
complications, and interminglings between the watched and the
watchers. An exciting ending, which includes a shoot out between
good guys and bad guys is most exciting and suspenseful. Personal
problems are also solved, of course.
This is the rare sequel that's as good as, and
in some ways better, than the original. The addition of O'Donnell
is a plus, as is the unlikely concept of Estevez passing himself
off as Dreyfuss and O'Donnell's grown son.
"Another Stakeout" benefits from great
locations. The Washington State locations are both beautiful and
fresh, not having been filmed a jillion times before by Hollywood.
Dreyfuss and Estevez have great comic timing together.
Like the best of the great comic teams, Estevez and Dreyfuss have
a mutual affection that's infectious.
