In the final farewell to all devoted Star Wars fans George Lucas
brings to life the fateful tragedy of the life of the 'Chosen One';
Jedi knight Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen). As he and Ambassador
Padme (Natalie Portman) do their best to hide their secret marriage
from the Senate Council, Padme's newfound pregnancy decidedly complicates
the matter.
Meanwhile Anakin and his Jedi master Obi-Won Kenobi (Ewan McGregor)
head to General Grievus's (Matthew Wood-voice) ship to rescue the
Senate's Supreme Chancellor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) from the throngs
of the Sith lord Count Dooku. Quickly defeating the Dark side enemies,
Obi-Won and Anakin return to the Jedi temple to hear of the squirmishes
emerging between the Republic council concerning the rights for
'control of the Senate'.
As the Jedi attempt to set up alliances in order to prepare for
the utmost mayhem ensuing between Senate counselors, Yoda travels
to the land of the Wookies where they agree to help the Jedi's wage
war against the Sith lord's prospected attacks. Problematic for
the Jedi forces is the conspicuous Chancellor Palpatine who has
long reigned in the Senate for far longer than his expected term,
and in want of legitimizing his reasons for doing so.
As the Jedi forces begin to suspect the Chancellor's motives with
the Senate, Padme grows weary with pregnancy and Anakin begins to
have nightmares foreseeing Padme's death in childbirth. To further
complicate matters Chancellor Palpatine has begun to invest earnest
interest in the young and vulnerable Anakin Skywalker. As the Jedi
knights impose on Anakin the task of spying on the Chancellor Palpatine
so as to gain insight as to his motives concerning the Republic,
so too does Chancellor Palpatine begin to play the game of cat and
mouse by twisting Anakin's mind against the Jedi mission.
Although Anakin comes to detect that perhaps Chancellor Palpatine
may be THE dark lord they have long been in search of, Anakin still
falls short of being able to withstand the Chancellor's enticing
rhetoric; filling him with promises of preventing Padme's death,
etc. Although originally intrigued with the Dark side for earnest
reasons, Anakin?s inability to accept Padme's destined death drives
him further and further away from the Force and into the grasp of
the Dark side.
Soon enough, despite Obi-Won, Yoda, Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson),
and Padme's efforts, Anakin finds himself torn between two opposing
philosophies. Meanwhile Chancellor Palpatine has set up ambushes,
ensnaring the Jedi masters in false play by incorporating Dark side
warriors into the Jedi warrior force so that the latter are completely
taken by surprise when their ?own? begin to turn on them. As it
will be, Obi-Won and Yoda barely escape their certain deaths with
the help of some alien friends including the Wookie Chewbacca and
a large bird-like dragon.
As a desperate Padme and disheartened Obi-Won hear of Anakin?s
absolute turning to the Dark side, they look on in horror as they
view evidence of him plotting to kill off the entire Jedi force,
including their young Jedi apprentices. In one last attempt to allow
love to over conquer his pride, Padme pleas for Anakin to leave
behind all warrior tactics and run away with her to raise their
child in solitude; away from the temptation and vice of politics
and power. But it is too late. Anakin Skywalker is no more and in
his place the evil Darth Vader emerges to grieve the loss of his
pregnant wife and sever all ties with his faithful master Obi-Won
Kenobi.
But as any Star Wars fan knows, Padme bears twins: Princess Leah
and Luke Skywalker. And though they hold the hope of the future
for the Jedi forces and the Senate, particularly the latter, there
are still 3 more thrilling tales that capture the ambivalent Darth
Vader and his precarious position as mortal enemy and father of
the newly 'Chosen One': Luke Skywalker.
"Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith" is a perfectly ironic
ending to the Star Wars legacy that George Lucas has so aptly delivered
for generations. With the first trilogy, which is of course actually
the final trilogy of the six-part chronicle, ending in happy Hollywood
fashion, Lucas gracefully brings about the inescapable and yet delightfully
palatable tragedy of Anakin Skywalker. Unlike the rest of the films
where the Jedi's are destined to kick butt, in the final film the
heroes will be humbled. Jedi forces will be brought to their knees,
mayhem in the Senate will ensue, and the bonds of love will be the
very thing that drives Anakin Skywalker to destroy himself. "Star
Wars III" is a well done final hoorah and farewell to all Star
Wars fans both young and old alike and is a must see for anyone
keeping up with the legendary sci-fi tale of the honorable Jedi
knights.
