Star Trek
Review: THE OMEGA GLORY
Director Vincent McEveety's, "THE OMEGA GLORY," is an
awkward, obvious Sci-Fi yarn. McEveety also directed various other
classic "Star Trek" episodes, as well as Disney feature
films, including: "Herbie Goes Bananas," (1980).
Morgan Woodward delivers a powerful performance as Star Fleet Captain,
Tracey. He had previously registered strongly in the episode "Dagger
of the Mind". Woodward, a veteran of many television and film
roles, is probably best known as the prison guard, with the reflective
sun glasses, in "Cool Hand Luke".
This story features yet another case of a Star Fleet Captain "going
native," and getting involved in altering the path of an alien
planet's development. Makes you wonder if the psychological screening
at Star Fleet Academy is up to snuff.
The episode's big "surprise" is when the planet's two
waring races, the "Yangs" and the "Kohms," turn
out to be descendants of Americans and Red Chinese Communists, who
landed on the planet many, many years before. Gene Roddenberry's
script is uncharacteristically heavy handed and obvious.
Memorabilia buffs may recall that "THE OMEGA GLORY" was
available in 3-D Viewmaster format, in the 60's. The depth and dimensionality
was quite remarkable.
"THE OMEGA GLORY" may be rather watchable for most Sci-Fi
viewers.
