Star Trek Review: THE EMPATH
Director John Erman's, "THE EMPATH," is an unusual Sci-Fi tale. Erman also directed various TV Movies, including: "Green Eyes" (1977) and "Another Woman's Child" (1983).
Kathryn Hays ("The Guiding Light," "Circle of Fear") portrays the empath, named Gem. Under Erman's sensitive direction, Hays gives a moving, nonverbal performance.
The torture of Kirk and the others, by alien beings, is rather graphic. Because the scene is strong, by Classic "Trek" standards, it has high impact.
The Teleplay, by Joyce Muskat, is both brutal and touching. This is the only episode she wrote for "Star Trek".
This episode particularly hinges on the interpersonal relationships between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. As they attempt to cope with a common threat, as well as communicate with the young empath, we see the dynamics of Star Trek's "Big Three" in action.
The alien interior "set" is mostly a darkened sound stage. The stylized environment helps create an appropriate dream/nightmare mood, and probably saved 'em some money at the same time.
"THE EMPATH" should be fairly watchable for most Sci-Fi viewers.
