Star Trek Review: ELAAN OF TROYIUS

Writer/Director John Meredyth Lucas,' "ELAAN OF TROYIUS," is an entertaining Sci-Fi yarn.

The title of the episode is the worst thing about the episode. Elaan of Troyius is obviously a reference to Helen of Troy, made famous in Homer's Iliad, way too obviously.

France Nuyen is exotic and lively as Elaan. Nuyen gained good notices for her work on stage, in "The World of Suzie Wong" .

Writer/Director John Meredyth Lucas' story is basically Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew," in space. The classic tale of male/female struggle makes a surprisingly effective transition into space.

"ELAAN OF TROYIUS" suffers a bit from a plot gimmick. The fact that the Elaan's jewelry happens to be made out of dilithium crystals, is way too convenient a way to solve the Enterprise's energy crisis. Director Lucas should have asked Writer Lucas to do a rewrite.

ELAAN OF TROYIUS should be rather watchable for most Sci-Fi viewers. Fans of "The Taming of the Shrew" will dig this episode.
