Star Trek Review: BY ANY OTHER NAME

Director Marc Daniels,' "BY ANY OTHER NAME" is an odd, fairly entertaining Sci-Fi yarn. Daniel's also directed the Trek episodes, "The Man Trap", "Mirror, Mirror", and "I, Mudd".

Warren Stevens, ("I Spy", "The Twilight Zone"), gives a solid, well modulated performance as head alien, Rojan. It's interesting that Stevens played the spaceship's doctor, in the 50's Sci-Fi classic, "Forbidden Planet", which some think strongly influenced Gene Roddenberry. Leslie Nielsen, who played the ship's captain in "Forbidden Planet", went so far as to refer to the movie as, "...the pilot for 'Star Trek' " in a talk show interview.

My favorite scene is when Scotty attempts to get the alien, Tomar, (Robert Fortier), drunk. He plies him with various kinds of exotic booze, as well as vintage scotch, to humorous effect.

As usual, Kirk gets to romance an alien woman, in this case, the Kelvan Kelinda, played by Barbara Bouchet, ("Casino Royale", "Sweet Charity"). Although motivation behind making out with Kalinda is to regain control of his ship, it's pretty much intergalactic kissy face by the numbers.

The episode has some of the cheesiest looking props of any classic "Trek" episode. When the alien, Kelvan, zaps Enterprise crew members, they are turned into compact styrofoam tetrahedrons, which appear to have been stabbed numerous times by a sharp instrument, {perhaps a pencil}. Give me a break!

"BY ANY OTHER NAME" will be somewhat watchable for Sci-Fi viewers. Scotty/James Doohan fans will enjoy his big drinking scene.
