Star Trek Review: THE LIGHTS OF ZETAR

Director Herb Kenwith's, THE LIGHTS OF ZETAR, is a moderately entertaining Sci-Fi yarn.

The script for THE LIGHTS OF ZETAR was written by Jeremy Tarcher and Shari Lewis. Yes, the Shari Lewis of Lambchop, the puppet fame. The script is fairly weak over all. Lambchop does not make an appearance, which is unfortunate, as the likable puppet might have goosed up the fun factor a bit.

This is one of the few episodes where Scotty has a love interest. Since Scotty's prime interests are the Enterprise's engines, technical journals, and, of course, vintage scotch, the mushy romantic stuff all seems rather unlikely. But hey, I guess if old "Bones" McCoy can get a girl, ("For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky"), Scotty is entitled also.

Scotty's love interest is Lt. Mira Romaine, played by Jan Shutan ("Sons and Daughters" and "Senior Year"). She's an attractive woman, and gives an okay performance, but why Scotty should become hung up on this particular woman is never made clear.

The lights, of THE LIGHTS OF ZETAR, are some colored, blinky lights. The "Star Trek" budget, usually limited, appears to have been stretched particularly tight during the production of this episode.

THE LIGHTS OF ZETAR may be slightly watchable for some Sci-Fi viewers. Scotty/James Doohan fans may dig this one, or, on the other hand, may be turned off by the amorous actions of the out of character Scotsman. THE LIGHTS OF ZETAR fails to dazzle.
